Technical Abstract: The loss of phosphorus from agricultural lands to water represents a primary cause of accelerated eutrophication, the most pervasive water quality problem in the U.S. today. This article reviews the root causes of today's problem, reviews the state of our knowledge on phosphorus cycling in the environment, and describes innovative management approaches aimed at tcontrolling phosphorus loss from agricultural lands.
