Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: If a livestock producer had a choice in terms of increasing efficiency of reproduction, what would it be? Many producers, would answer that they would like to predetermine or control the sex of the offspring obtained from whatever animal they are raising. With respect to the human, families at risk to a sex-linked disease might indicate a desire to have a child of the sex that would be unaffected by a particular disease. The Beltsville Sperm Sexing Technology is the only fully proven means of separating X- and Y-chromosome bearing sperm into separate populations. The technology is based on one well known fact, that the X chromosome of mammals carries more DNA than the companion Y-chromosome. Since each sperm carry one or the other to make a 50:50 ratio of Y to X, one can readily see the potential for skewing the ratio. The technology has been tested in numerous mammals with similar results that is a 90% chance of getting the sex desired. Our current technology utilizes high-speed sorting to achieve 6 million X and million Y sperm per hour.
