Technical Abstract: Fractals have been widely used to describe heterogeneous structures in the soil systems. A special issue of Geoderma has been assembled to demonstrate both the challenges and opportunities presented by fractals for modelling processes in soils. The material of the special issue is used to review the utility of fractals in integrating processes within and across scales to study the interaction between processes and heterogeneity. It i concluded that fractals are a useful conceptual tool and yield insight into an otherwise overwhelming complexity. However, it is clear that significant challenges exist in their application, and opportunities for future exploitation and development are suggested.
