Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The reproductive biology of the potato must be interpreted in the context of 2n gametes, stylar barriers, and Endosperm Balance Number (EBN). Stylar barriers are a factor in both intra- and interspecific hybridization. EBNs must be in a 2:1 maternal to paternal ratio in the endosperm for normal seed development to occur. It is believed to be controlled by three unlinked loci, that are homozygous within a species and have additive effects. 2n gametes are essential with EBN for ploidy manipulation. Finally there may be a relationship between EBN and stylar barriers. The better we understand EBN, stylar barriers 2n gametes and their interactions, the more readily we will be able to exploit the species as we reach further into this wonderful genepool.
