Technical Abstract: The burning over the centuries of the indigenous vegetation on Mollisol soils have given rise to char materials. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of the humic acids (HAs) and fulvic acids (FAs) from Mollisols show strong signals in the 110 to 150 ppm resonance characteristic of aromatic and unsaturation functionalities. A technique is described which subjects the HAs to the XAD-8 resin procedure. The FA fractions were previously treated with XAD-8 resin. That would cause the char materials to be retained during back elution with sodium hydroxide. Analytical data for the FAs, and the HAs before and after resin treatment are presented. The CP TOSS spectra (in which spinning side bands are eliminated) show the aromatic signals for the FAs are smaller than those for HAs, and indicate the extents to which char substances contribute to the aromatic resonances.
