Interpretive Summary: Cutworm moths in the family Noctuidae are major agricultural pests causing billions of dollars of damage annually. A new pest of asparagus, Spodoptera ochrea, was intercepted by APHIS from shipments being imported from Peru. The differences between S. ochrea and its closest relatives are compared. Larval host plants are presented for these species. Other species of Spodoptera attacking asparagus are discussed. The results of this paper will be important to scientists, economic entomologists, and asparagus growers. Also, APHIS, PPQ inspectors and identifiers will use this information.

Technical Abstract: Spodoptera ochrea has recently been discovered as a pest on asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) in Peru. This species is compared with closely related species of Spodoptera and differentiating characters are discussed and illustrated. Other asparagus feeding Spodoptera are discussed.
