Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Background information is provided on geographical distributions of reniform nematodes and their taxonomy, identification, population variability, host ranges, crops damaged, life cycles, and histopathology. Crop resistance is briefly reviewed in relation to mechanisms, sources of resistant germplasm, and inheritance of resistance. Methods for evaluating ggermplasm are discussed in relation to unique biological characteristics o reniform nematodes, the distinction between resistance, immunity, and tolerance, the maintenance, preparation and application of inoculum, and various factors to be considered during plant culture, such as temperature, pot size, soil texture, experimental duration, and repotting of plant selections. Parameters of nematode reproduction and plant damage are also contrasted. A key to the nine species of reniform nematodes is provided along with an extensive table providing details related to inoculum, plant culture, and measurements of resistance used in 54 published studies. For further reading, 106 literature references are provided.
