At 4, 10, 18 and 31 weeks of age chickens were tested for ALV-J infection by virus isolation and neutralization tests. The incidence of ALV-J viremia in chickens expressing EV21 was significantly higher than that of chickens lacking EV21. Chickens lacking EV21 were able to mount an immune response faster than chickens harboring EV21. By 31 weeks of age, 19 of 35 chickens harboring EV21 remined positive for ALV-J. Ninety five percent of the virus positive chickens did not have antibodies and were considered viremic tolerant. The data suggest that endogenous virus may influence the response of chickens to ALV-J- induced viremia and antibody. |
