Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Analysis of molecular linkage groups within the soybean (Glycine max) genome reveals many homologous regions indicating that soybean is an ancient polyploid. The fragmented arrangement of the duplicated regions suggest that extensive rearrangements as well as additional duplications have occurred since the polyploidization event. Comparison of molecular linkage data of polyploids with related diploids will assist in the understanding of the evolutionary history of the polyploid genome. We have begun detailed characterization of a set of homologous regions from the soybean genome and the inferred homologous linkage group from the related diploid Phaseolus vulgaris. This type of analysis can be extended to other, more studied species to gain understanding of the genome evolution. By identifying differences and similarities between the soybean genome and those of other species it should be possible to determine how polyploidization occurred and some of the other mechanisms of diploidization which contributed to soybean genome evolution.
