Interpretive Summary: We have shown that knotted1 regulates cytokinin metabolism which in turn controls growth regulation in leaves.

Technical Abstract: Plant senescence is delayed when the growth regulator, cytokinin, is applied. We have mimicked a delay of cytokinin with the homeobox gene, knotted1. Knotted1 is normally expressed in the growing tip and is required for leaf production. When knotted1 is expressed in senescing leaves, the leaves are delayed in senescence and the leaves accumulate cytokinin. These results suggest that knotted1 regulates cytokinin metabolism.
