Technical Abstract: The state-of-the-art in life systems analysis and modeling for highly mobile pest insects includes organization and analysis of remotely sensed geographic data, construction of a spatially and temporally varying description of habitat, and interfacing population dynamics models with spatially explicit habitat data. The population dynamics of the Russian wheat aphid (RWA), a highly mobile pest of wheat in the central Great Plains, has been studied extensively and modeled in wheat and non- cultivated grass hosts. Based on the current level of understanding of RWA dispersal and its role in population development, and the success of simulation models in predicting within site population dynamics, it seemed logical to extend modeling to landscape and regional scales. The purpose of this paper is to outline progress toward that goal. Specifically, we describe the acquisition, classification, and collation of LandSat MSS, meteorological and other spatially referenced data layers for the central Great Plains region. Furthermore, we outline the modeling approach being used to address RWA population dynamics from landscape and regional perspectives. Finally, we describe the anticipated role of the spatially explicit model in defining appropriate scales for implementation of area- wide integrated pest management programs for the RWA.
