Interpretive Summary: This review article summarizes the research done on lettuce in the areas of: 1) breeding for plant appearance and growth characteristics, 2) breeding for resistance to diseases and insects, 3) crosses with other species related to lettuce, 4) development of means to make the breeding process easier and more efficient, 5) breeding projects with social goals. The second part of the paper deals with possible breeding goals for the future: 1) possible uses of molecular biology tools, 2) public private breeding responsibilities 3) alternatives to pesticide use, 4) dietary benefits of lettuce, 6) value-added products, and 7) lettuce as a research organism.
