Interpretive Summary: Pea is one of the most important temperate legume crops in the world. Both winter and spring types are grown in many countries including China. Incorporating cold tolerance to pea cultivars has been one of the breeding objectives for stabilizing yield and for possibly expanding winter pea into part of the existing spring pea production areas for better crop yield. Published literature reported the identification of a few cold tolerant pea accessions with Chinese origin. However, the diverse pea germplasm collection maintained by the National Genebank of China has never been evaluated for cold tolerance. This paper reports the result of a large scale evaluation of 3,672 pea germplasm accessions for cold tolerance in the open field during winter in Qingdao. During the 2009-2010 winter season, we found that 214 accessions that were highly resistant to cold, 835 accessions were moderate resistant and 2,623 accessions were susceptible to cold. These identified accessions with high level of cold tolerance are useful for genetic improvement of pea crop.

Technical Abstract: As a cool season crop, pea (Pisum sativum L.) can tolerate frost at the vegetative stage but has yield loss when freezing stress occurs at reproductive stage. Cold tolerance improvement of pea varieties is important for the stable yield and the expansion of winter pea planting area. Under the natural low temperature condition during winter in Qingdao, Shandong, China, we evaluated the cold tolerance of 3,672 pea germplasm accessions in an open field and categorized them with high resistance (214), moderate resistance (835), and susceptibility (2623). The highly and moderately resistant genotypes were validated in the following year. We found that genotypes from the winter production region had higher cold tolerance than genotypes from the spring production region. The accessions identified in high level of cold tolerance are commended as potential genetic resources in cold tolerance breeding of pea crop.
