Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Turfgrass fulfills essential functions for athletics, cooling of urban heat zones, aesthetics, ground cover, weed suppression, and water filtration. As parks managers, landscapers, engineers, and municipalties select turfgrasses for building or renovation projects, they must consider needs such as drought tolerance, salt tolerance, spring greenup, traffic and athletic use, and fertilization. Depending on their use, different turfgrass species, and different varieties within those species will be best adapted and suitable. We discuss species specific pros and cons of perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, fine-leaved fescues, and perennial wheatgrasses. We then discuss which varieties exist in each species, and the variation among those varieties for the traits of interest.
