Technical Abstract: Potato psyllid is a major pest of potato in the western United States that transmits the pathogen that causes zebra chip disease. Potato psyllids, like all psyllids, have close associations with bacterial endosymbionts living within them. These endosymbionts may be obligate or facultative, and their presence is often beneficial to the insect. We discuss previous and ongoing research conducted at the USDA-ARS in Wapato, WA on endosymbionts of the potato psyllid. Our research will provide an improved understanding of potato psyllid biology and ecology which will help growers make informed pest management decisions. Our research may also lead to the development of novel ways to control potato psyllid by targeting their endosymbionts.
