Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Over land, L-band observations are primarily used for the detection of soil freeze/thaw events and the quantification of surface soil moisture content. Both products have important science, climate and decision support applications and would benefit from longer historical data records derived from satellite remote sensing. This talk will review the status of current satellite-based L-band radiometers over land and discuss prospects for deriving stable, long-term L-band datasets over land. Special attention will be made to the problem of re-scaling land-based soil moisture retrievals acquired from multiple satellite-based L-band sensors in order to create seamless long-term data products. Such rescaling is theoretically possible, but – in practice – typically requires substantial temporal overlap between successive satellite missions. Given these temporal overlap requirements, prospects for creating seamless land data products product – which integrate observations acquired from both the ESA Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and NASA Soil Moisture Active/Passive mission - will be presented and discussed. The potential application of these products to land data assimilation reanalysis systems will also be highlighted.
