History of ‘Russet Burbank’. American Journal of Potato Research. 91(1):32-74. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: ‘Russet Burbank’ is the foremost French fry processing cultivar in the world. ‘Russet Burbank’ was first identified as a mutation of ‘Burbank’ in 1914; 100 years ago! Despite the importance of this cultivar, relatively little is known of its genetics or its colorful breeding history. This research examined the history of ‘Russet Burbank’, clarified its ancestry, noted its nutritional value and confirmed its origin as a mutation of ‘Burbank’. One outcome of this work will be a centenary project to correct germplasm notations and seed company descriptors for ‘Russet Burbank’ and its progenitors. |
