Interpretive Summary: Spring malting barley, particularly 2-row, is the main barley type used by the malting industry. Development of more productive spring 2-row cultivars is important for keeping the malting barley production competitive with other crops, ‘Merem’ is a two-rowed spring malting barley developed by the USDA-ARS, Aberdeen, ID, in cooperation with the University of Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station. Merem has higher yield than Harrington and AC Metcalfe in irrigated conditions and higher malt extract than the control lines Harrington, AC Metcalfe, and Conrad. The high grain yield and high malt extract of Merem should benefit the malting industry in general and craft brewers in particular. It will also be valuable for private and public malting breeding programs as source of high yield and malt extract.

Technical Abstract: ‘Merem’ is a two-rowed spring malting barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) developed by the USDA-ARS, Aberdeen, ID, in cooperation with the University of Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station. Merem has been tested in USDA-ARS, and all other cooperative trials as “02Ab17271”. ‘02Ab17271’ is a selection from the cross 85Ab2323/Merit. 85Ab2323, a USDA-ARS experimental selection from the cross “79Ab10542/78Ab6871”, is a high yielding well adapted 2-row spring barley from the USDA-ARS Aberdeen, ID. Both 79Ab10542 and 78Ab6871 are experimental selections from the USDA-ARS Aberdeen, ID. Merit developed by Busch Agricultural Resources LLC. Fort Collins, CO. was selected from the “Manley/2B80-350” cross. Merit is a well adapted 2-row spring malt barley that was approved by AMBA in 1999. Manley developed by B. Harvey and B. Rossnagel of the University of Saskatchewan Crop Development Centre was derived from the cross of ‘Norbert/MT54-7143’ and was registered in 1991. Merem has higher yield than Harrington and AcMetcalfe in irrigated conditions and higher malt extract than all control lines of Harrington, AcMetcalfe, and Conrad.
