Technical Abstract: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is one of the most contagious viral diseases that can affect cloven-hoofed livestock and wild animals. Outbreaks of FMD have caused devastating economic losses and the slaughter of millions of animals in many regions of the world affecting the food chain and global development. A wealth of research has accumulated for over 100 years since the discovery of its causative agent, the FMD virus (FMDV). This chapter summarizes the current knowledge of FMDV at the molecular level as well as disease pathogenesis, host immune response, disease outbreaks and various approaches for disease diagnosis and control.
