Technical Abstract: For more than a decade, the USDA ARS Center of Excellence located within the Delaware State University College of Agriculture and Related Sciences has been focused on foodborne virus research with special emphasis on bivalve shellfish. Research accomplishments include: 1) development of expedient extraction and RT-PCR based detection methods for norovirus, hepatitis A virus, and other viruses. 2) identification and evaluation of high pressure processing as a means to inactivate viruses without cooking, and 3) developing a detailed understanding of how viruses persist within shellfish.
