Interpretive Summary: The coffee berry borer is the most devastating pest of coffee throughout the world and causes millions of dollars in losses each year. Increased knowledge on the basic biology of the coffee berry borer can result in new insights on how to control this insect, thereby reducing losses and increasing yields. In this paper we report on a new dissection technique that effectively removes the alimentary canal from this minute beetle and allows for the recovery of microorganisms present within. These microorganisms will be the subjects of studies aimed at elucidating how the insect breaks down caffeine. This information will be of use to coffee scientists, entomologists, microbiologists, and the coffee industry.

Technical Abstract: A novel technique has been developed to dissect the alimentary canal of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei. The technique allows recovering bacteria and fungi present inside the alimentary canal. These microorganisms will be the subjects of studies aimed at elucidating how the insect breaks down caffeine.
