Interpretive Summary: Science has advanced technologies related to biological insecticides, and this book focuses on some of the most agriculturally important insect pests and their control by application of biological control. Our chapter reviews the current literature and provides information about a variety of biological microbes used as insecticidal products, either as intact organisms or specifically modified products (e.g., fermentation products or genetically modified crops). This chapter provides a single source for comparing uses, benefits, and criticisms among biological control technologies, which are commercially available. This chapter contributes heavily to the third section of the proposed book outline, the development of new technologies and their application for insect pest control.

Technical Abstract: Microorganisms able to infect and kill insect pests, metabolites from plants and microorganisms, and transgenic crops are biotechnologically derived products that are being promoted for use to control insect pests in lieu of chemical insecticides. Products based on these technologies effectively control important pests of health, food, and agriculture systems. Among products classified as bioinsecticides, entomopathogenic microorganisms, organism metabolites, and transgenic seeds are considered as biotechnology derived agents for insect pest control. There are many bioinsecticides that are efficacious and currently available as commercial products in the agroindustry market. This review describes background of the general categories of bioinsecticides and lists current bioinsecticide products available for use to control insect pests.
