Research Project: Use of Genomic Selection to Improve Economically Important Traits in Farm-raised Catfish

Location: Warmwater Aquaculture Research Unit

Project Number: 6066-31000-016-014-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2016
End Date: May 31, 2021

Objective:
1. Evaluate use of genomic selection to improve economically important traits in purebred channel catfish. 2. Evaluate use of genomic selection to improve economically important traits in channel catfish x blue catfish hybrids.

Approach:
Analyze phenotypic, genotypic and pedigree data from purebred channel catfish populations under development at the Warmwater Aquaculture Research Unit (WARU), ARS to determine optimal strategies to implement genomic selection, resulting in the development of superior germplasm for release to U.S. catfish farmers. Analyze phenotypic, genotypic and pedigree data from purebred blue catfish, channel catfish and hybrid catfish populations at the Warmwater Aquaculture Research Unit, ARS to determine optimal strategies to implement genomic selection, resulting in the development of superior germplasm for release to U.S. catfish farmers.
