Project Number: 3040-63000-001-002-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 1, 2016
End Date: May 31, 2020
Objective:
Determine the partitioning coefficients of 5 commonly used antibiotics and their degradates from beef production systems within runoff water stored in lagoons and determine if any abiotic degradation occurs.
Approach:
Utilizing batch studies, 5 different antibiotics will be put into beef lagoon waste. Four concentrations will be tested and 7 time point samples will be taken to determine how much of the antibiotic has absorbed to the solid particles within the waste. Three of the drugs are labeled with either 14-carbon or tritium and will be analyzed using radiochemical methods. The other two drugs will be analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection (HPLC-UV/Vis). Data collected from study will be used for modeling purposes.
