Objective:
To review and update USDA's Automated Multiple-Pass Method (AMPM) and related technical databases to assure that information collected about intakes of foods and beverages in What We Eat in America (WWEIA), National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) are current with today's food supply changes, and to analyze and report national dietary intake data collected in WWEIA, NHANES in various scientific venues to address topical nutrition issues.
Approach:
USDA's AMPM updates are divided by 130 AMPM pathway groups of food and beverages that have related questioning to elicit the required detailed information. Review and update of questions and response options by selected pathway groups will be conducted. Tasks to be completed for each group will include: 1) review of current intake data and various references to identify changes in the food supply regarding the foods/beverages, 2) determine and prepare changes to AMPM, 3) develop AMPM specifications to reflect changes and test AMPM to assure that changes have been correctly operationalized, and 4) apply changes to the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies. WWEIA, NHANES dietary data will be reviewed and analyzed to include new topics of importance to stakeholders and data users. Topics include a special set of summarized data tables on nutrient intakes for infants and toddlers and a research paper on changes in dietary intake over time for infants and toddlers; and summarized data tables on food and beverage intakes by age and gender groups based on the WWEIA Food Categories. Other topics of importance will be determined and addressed.
