Objective:
The objective of this nonfunded cooperative agreement is to develop a Cooperative Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) that is coordinated through the office of the Dean of Research at West Texas A&M University.
Approach:
Three institutions in the Texas Panhandle region conduct research using livestock, small mammals, wildlife, and other animals. These are West Texas A&M University in Canyon (WTAMU), Texas A&M AgriLife Research in Amarillo and Bushland (TALR), and the US Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Research Service at Bushland (USDA-ARS). All three institutions are members of the Cooperative Research, Education, and Extension Team (CREET), the Consortium for Cattle Feeding and Environmental Sciences (CCFES) and Southern Great Plains Dairy Consortium (SGPDC) and frequently conduct collaborative research using animals, scientists, staff, and facilities from two or more of these institutions. Under the Animal Welfare Act, all research with animals requires approval from an IACUC before it begins. Under this agreement WTAMU, TALR and USDA-ARS agree to combine their IACUC procedures into one comprehensive program to be administered by WTAMU and be implemented by the WTAMU/CREET IACUC.
