Location: Plant Germplasm Introduction and Testing Research
Project Number: 2090-21000-032-001-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement
Start Date: Dec 18, 2015
End Date: Dec 17, 2020
Objective:
Acquire, conserve, distribute and develop native plant genetic resources needed for restoration on public and private lands.
Approach:
There is increasing interest and need to utilize native plant germplasm for restoration after wildfires and other disturbances. The USDA-ARS Western Regional Plant Introduction Station (WRPIS) will acquire, process, and catalogue seed collections made by the BLM Seeds of Success (SOS) project. Basic collection data will be entered into the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) database. Security back-up samples will be sent to the National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation (NCGRP), Ft. Collins, CO for long term storage. Seed will be distributed to public and private researchers or growers to further research and development of native plant materials for use on public and other lands. Collections will be made available and transferred to crop specific curators within the National Plant Germplasm System. Characterization, collection, and seed zone research will be completed and published for keystone restoration species.
