Research Project: Prevention and Control of Invasive Insect Pests

Location: Tropical Crop and Commodity Protection Research

Project Number: 2040-22430-026-009-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 16, 2014
End Date: Sep 15, 2019

Objective:
The objectives of this cooperative agreement are to: 1) to develop, evaluate and transfer least-toxic, environmentally suitable and publicly acceptable technologies and processes for invasive pest management in order to enhance the production and interstate and international movement of Hawaiian agricultural products and protect resources and communities in Hawaii; 2) to identify and characterize effective environmental and economic impacts of technologies and processes for invasive pest control; and 3) to prevent, detect, and rapidly respond to new invasive pest problems in Hawaii through improved identification and survey techniques, and development of pest-specific integrated pest management methods. Amendment No 07 adds Federal funds in the amount of $135,810 for continuation of research in the prevention and control of invasive insect pests to enhance the production and interstate and international movement to Hawaiian agriculture products.

Approach:
The approach of this project is to address the identification, detection and distribution of invasive pests by application of current and improved surveys, host surveys, trapping and baiting strategies, and taxonomic and genetic methods. Least-toxic pest control strategies will be developed and evaluated to address new and continuing invasive pest threats to Hawaii, while identifying potential environmental problems and developing mitigation methods for current or novel pest control strategies in a variety of Hawaii agricultural, natural, and urban systems. Economic impacts of pests and invasive pest control methods will be considered and evaluated.
