Research Project: Alternative Energy Sources and Energy Conservation Retrofits at the U.S. National Arboretum

Location: Public Horticulture and Engagement Unit

Project Number: 8020-21000-155-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2014
End Date: Aug 31, 2019

Objective:
To collect and evaluate scientific data on the use of alternative energy technologies and energy-conserving retrofits for systems that support the daily operatons and mission of the U.S. National Arboretum through implementation of demonstration projects.

Approach:
ARS U.S. National Arboretum (USNA) will collaborate with faculty and students of the Collaborator (Alfred State College) to evaluate opportunities for demonstration of alternative energy sources and for energy-conserving retrofits at the USNA campus, and will collect data to aid in the evaluation of demonstrated technologies. Proposed projects will be identified and selected, institutions will collaborate to design and implement demonstration projects over the next five years at the USNA. These projects will produce data helpful to the evaluation of energy economy technologies. The projects will also provide opportunities for training and demonstrate how energy-conserving technologies are developing to serve the needs of landscape maintenance systems.
