Research Project: Modernization of USDA Nutrient Databases for Incorporation of Branded Food Label Composition Data from Industry

Location: Methods and Application of Food Composition Laboratory

Project Number: 8040-52000-068-032-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2014
End Date: Jul 31, 2019

Objective:
Design a new, modernized ARS food and nutrient database system with expanded and flexible data submission functions, increased processing capabilities, and transparent and easy access to the information.

Approach:
ARS/BHNRC will collaborate with the Cooperator to identify, evaluate, select, and manage the design of a new database to replace the existing National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference (SR) and the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS). This database will incorporate expanded capabilities for automated data submission (from industry, academia, and government labs), expanded information (food label and taxonomic, genetic, and analytical data), expanded accessibility (SR, FNDDS, branded food labels, and taxonomic, genetic, and analytical data), and linkages to external, food-related databases. The new database system will be developed in parallel with the existing databases for continued operation.
