1. Assess the genotypic differences of cacao and legume cover crops to abiotic stresses such as nutrient deficiency/elemental toxicities, moisture stresses, and shade. 2. Characterize and manage soil nutritional components essential for optimal cacao yields. 3. Develop environmentally sustainable cacao management systems that improve soil quality and cacao yields.

Fundação Pau Brasil (FUNPAB) actively promotes sustainable cacao production through collaborations with cacao research institutions. Collaborative research will be carried with scientists from UESC (Univ. Estadual de Santa Cruz), CEPLAC/CEPEC (Comissao Executiva do Plano da Lavoura Cacaueira/Centro de Pesquisas de Cacau); Instituto Cabruca, Ilheus, Bahia, Brazil; UENF (Univ. Estadual do Norte Fluminense) Campos, RJ, Brazil; and EMBRAPA-Center, Santo de Antonio, GO, Brazil. This agreement will emphasize the coordination of research approaches of the USDA/ARS and all collaborating institutions mentioned here and will promote sustainable cacao production research and identification of abiotic stress-tolerant cacao germplasms. The agreement promotes international partnerships and cooperation with the USDA-ARS.
