Project Number: 2054-63000-001-04
Start Date: Jan 01, 2013
End Date: Mar 31, 2016
On farm emission measurements will be made at a total of six different wastewater storage ponds with measurements at each pond made over the course of one year (four ponds have already been monitored). Ambient weather, herd and feed data will also be collected over this time period. Lagoon samples will be collected and analyzed each month for total nitrogen, total solids, volatile solids, total ammonical nitrogen, pH, ORP, EC, and temperature. The data from the wastewater ponds will be compiled and relationships between manure characteristics, herd management, manure management and weather data will be determined in order to develop equations that will better predict emissions from wastewater storage throughout the year. In addition, in year two, emissions from composting of scraped lot manure and solid separated manures will be measured over the composting cycle and correlated with manure characteristics, weather and compost management. This data in addition to data collected in previous emissions studies (Bjorneberg et al., 2009, Leytem et al., 2011, Leytem et al., 2012) will be compiled into a database that will be used for improving/refining and evaluating the process-based models Integrated Farm System Model (IFSM) and Dairy Gas Emissions Model (DairyGEM).
