The yeast-fermenting CO2 generator (YFG) will be used to ferment an array of carbohydrate sources. The gasses released will be used to attract wild and laboratory populations of mosquitoes to baited CDC traps. Trapping experiments will use three sets of a Latin square design with four treatments (sucrose, honey, molasses, and dry ice) rotated through four locations over four nights of consecutive trapping. Mosquitoes collected from the wild will be identified to species and counted. Non-target organisms will also be counted, but identified to family. Known numbers of laboratory reared mosquitoes will be released in large outdoor screened cages at CMAVE. One YFG baited CDC trap will be placed at each of four corners and rotated over four consecutive nights of trapping. Trap nights will begin at 1700 and end the following morning at 0800. Gasses released by fermentation will be collected and measured to determine volume in relation to carbohydrate concentration for each treatment. In addition, the gasses will be analyzed to determine their components and concentrations by GCMS.
