Research Project: Forb Islands: Possible Techniques to Improve Forb Seedling Establishment for Diversifying Sagebrush-Steppe Communities

Objective:
Determine if the patented Hollow Frame Snow System (HFFS) or N-Sulate fabric in combination with seed pelleting technology can be used to successfully establish important Great Basin forbs in islands at three sites in Utah and Idaho.

Approach:
Studies will be established with three primary treatments (HFFS fence, N-Sulate fabric, and control) in a randomized complete block design with four replications at two sites in Utah and one site in Idaho. A total of 33 rows of individual forb species and associated seed pelleting configurations will be randomly seeded into 4.3-m rows in each of the three treatments during October 2015. Seedling emergene, plant growth, phenological development, and seed production will be determined in the treatments. Soil water content and soil temperatures will be monitored to provide a mechanistic understanding of seedling responses.
