Research Project: Standardization of Sperm Evaluation Across Gene Banks

Location: Agricultural Genetic Resources Preservation Research

Project Number: 3012-31000-006-009-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 9, 2015
End Date: Jul 31, 2020

Objective:
Develop a common set of methods for multispecies gamete evaluation methods for multiple gene bank use.

Approach:
Cattle, swine and multiple fresh water fish semen samples will be used to evaluate sample sperm motility factors pre-cryopreservation and post-cryopreservation. Using computer assisted sperm analyzers (CASA) samples from ARS and LSU laboratories will be evaluated and statistically analyzed. Common sets of motility factors will be evaluated and employee across gene banks. Opportunities to explore incorporation of genomic information into the evaluation process will be pursued. Having cross gene bank standardization will in turn facilitate future studies and evaluations. Methods developed will be shared with other national gene banks (e.g., Brazil) and thereby facilitate further development and gene bank exchange, if so desired. The NAGP Policy Coordinating Committee will receive and review preservations on this effort in order to facilitate the breadth of dissemination.
