Research Project: Wheat Rust Resistance Research

Location: Hard Winter Wheat Genetics Research

Project Number: 3020-21000-011-008-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2014
End Date: Aug 30, 2019

Objective:
1) Identify DNA markers associated with rust resistance genes in wheat; and 2) Identify wheat genes that mediate susceptibility to wheat rusts.

Approach:
Recombinant inbred populations have been developed for three crosses between adapted high yielding winter wheat lines and spring wheat lines that are thought to carry durable slow rusting resistance to one or more species of wheat rust. These populations will be phenotyped for resistance reaction in the field and greenhouse. They will also be genotyped using either genotyping-by-sequencing or 90K SNP genotyping arrays. Resistance loci will be mapped and markers will be developed for high throughput assays. Wheat susceptibility genes for leaf rust will be identified and tested using a variety of functional genomics approaches including RNA-Seq, EMS mutant panels, and gene silencing experiments.
