Research Project: Biology of Dipteran Vectors of Diseases Impacting Livestock and Humans

Location: Arthropod-borne Animal Diseases Research

Project Number: 3020-32000-007-011-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2014
End Date: Jul 31, 2019

Objective:
The purpose of this agreement is to enhance the understanding of the molecular, microbiological and behavioral processes influencing the biology of dipteran vectors.

Approach:
Ongoing projects by ARS scientists aim to understand the molecular biology, microbial ecology and behavior of dipteran vectors impacting the nations livestock. A multidisciplinary approach combining genetics, microbiology, vector ecology, insect physiology, ecology and other subdisciplines with entomology will be used to determine and describe the biology of dipteran vectors. This includes but is not limited to the microbial ecology of dipteran larvae, the microbe-molecular interactions of pathogens with the fly alimentary canal, the molecular-genetic basis of vector competence, and the population genetics of insect vectors.
