Objective:
1) Select for lower FHB and DON in our breeding programs to develop commercially viable resistant varieties.
2) Describe the genetics of FHB resistance in a multi-parent (MAGIC) population and utilize its progeny for breeding.
3) Characterize the impact of fall-sown barley on reducing FHB relative to spring sown barley.
Approach:
We will establish mist-irrigated and controlled-inoculated disease nurseries to generate high quality disease severity and mycotoxin data for breeding populations, a multi-parent mapping population, and an inoculation timing experiment. Genetic analysis and genomic selection will be conducted using genome wide SNP marker data.
