Determine the effect of high temperatures on glycoalkaloid amounts in tubers. The potato industry has asked for information about the effect of high temperatures on glycoalkaloid amounts. Unfortunately, information about this is limited and published results tend to be older literature reporting contradictory results, using cultivars not relevant for the modern U.S. industry and using older analytical methods.
Assess the effect of high temperature stress during the plant growth cycle on glycoalkaloid concentrations in potato tubers by conducting 1) controlled experiments under greenhouse conditions and 2) also under natural field conditions in two different areas in Texas. Ten clones will be evaluated under controlled greenhouse conditions in a split plot design (optimum versus high temperature stress) with four repetitions. The clones will include three reference varieties: Atlantic, for the processing chipping market susceptible to heat stress due to the high incidence of internal heat necrosis; for the French fry market, Russet Burbank, which is susceptible to heat stress due to the high internals; and Russet Norkotah for the fresh market potato and thought to have heat tolerance. Potato varieties from the Texas A&M Potato Breeding Program selected under high temperature stress: Reveille Russet, Vanguard Russet, Sierra Gold, Sierra Gold, Yellow Rose, Russet Norkotah strain 278 and 296.
