Research Project: Evaluation of Dietary and Nutritional Assessment

Location: Food Surveys Research Group

Project Number: 8040-10700-001-010-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 30, 2022
End Date: Sep 29, 2027

Objective:
To review and evaluate USDA’s Automated Multiple-Pass Method questions, probes, and response options used in collecting 24hour dietary recalls of the U.S. population to assure that information collected on foods and beverages are current with today’s food supply changes and support timely public data release.

Approach:
The questions, probes, and response options as detailed in USDA’s Automated Multiple-Pass Method, the 24hour dietary recall collection instrument, used in national dietary data collection in WWEIA, NHANES will be evaluated in relation to addressing specific nutrition- and diet-related health priorities within the food supply and market dynamics. The evaluation will identify potential enhancements to the 24hour dietary recall methodology for food and beverage questions in the AMPM. Potential enhancements recommended must support 1) an anticipated change in WWEIA data collection, that is the task of applying the nutrient values to reported intakes during data collection versus the current process which is completed post collection in WWEIA, and 2) capability of estimating nutrient profiles of foods and beverages from composition data available in USDA’s FoodData Central.
