Research Project: Understanding of Storage Diseases in Sugarbeet and Assessing the Quality Problems in the Factory Processing

Location: Sugarbeet and Potato Research

Project Number: 3060-21000-045-009-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2022
End Date: Jul 31, 2025

Objective:
1) To identify and characterize postharvest pathogens from sugarbeet roots in storage in North Dakota and Minnesota. 2) To identify microbial contaminants at various steps in sugar processing streams.

Approach:
The cooperator will carry out the following: 1) Isolation and characterization of plant pathogens using molecular assays. 2) Perform experiments to verify Koch's postulates for common postharvest plant pathogens. 3) Determine microbial diversity indices and identify most abundant bacterial species in the raw sugarbeet juice samples.
