Research Project: Optimization Of Techniques For Detection And Quantification Of Soilborne Pathogens Using Molecular Techniques

Location: Crop Improvement and Protection Research

Project Number: 2038-22000-019-030-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Feb 1, 2022
End Date: Jan 31, 2023

Objective:
Techniques for quantifying specific soilborne pathogens using molecular tools were developed; the objective of this proposal is to 1) optimize their use and 2) evaluate how long DNA from nonviable propagules remains intact enough to be detected by the molecular assays.

Approach:
Commercial fields fumigated to control soilborne pathogens will be sampled at specified intervals and processed to determine at what point is DNA from propagules killed by the soil fumigation no longer able to be amplified.
