Research Project: Analyzing Nutritional Content of Pollen in Relation to Long-term Honey Bee Colony Health

Location: Invasive Species and Pollinator Health

Project Number: 2030-21000-055-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 15, 2021
End Date: Aug 14, 2023

Objective:
USDA Pollen Metabolomics: Perform analytical services to complete metabolomic profiling of pollen collected from plants and honey bee hives to determine the nutritional content of pollen collected from hives located near the ARS honey bee research lab in Davis, California and from different plant species planted in pollinator habitats.

Approach:
Services include completing a single reverse phase LC-MS platform analysis for ~400 samples. This will comprise of sample preparation, data acquisition using UPLC-Q-TOF, data processing, annotation, and completing statistical analyses including ANOVA/PCA. In addition, sample extraction blanks and quality control samples will also be run to ensure publication level data quality. Training will be provided to prepare personnel to perform these specialized services within the 1-year timeline specified and all of the results will be interpreted.
