Research Project: Adapting Agricultural Databases for Genome Features

Location: Crop Improvement and Genetics Research

Project Number: 2030-21000-056-002-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2021
End Date: Jul 31, 2025

Objective:
With numerous genomes coming to bear for genome databases there is a need to improve navigation of the data resources and to evaluate the data provided. There is a need to improve resolution in polyploid genomes and pangenome representations. The efforts presented here will address the database and accessory tool development as well as assisting to populate the informational resources for the project.

Approach:
There are on-going efforts to transition fixed-schema relational databases to a content-management database system based on a biologically-oriented schema design. The ability to improve data organization will assist the development of improved data-rich queries and visualization. It is important to better organize genome feature data-points so that complex biological queries may be sought by researchers invested in using answers for crop improvement and future development strategies.
