Research Project: Fusarium Head Blight Breeding Research at North Carolina State University

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-136-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2025

Objective:
Objectives are 1) increase the number of superior varieties with Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistance available and reduce DON in the Southeastern grain supply; 2) increase cooperation and efficiency of breeding programs in the Southern CP, and 3) evaluate and implement modern breeding technologies to enhance improvement of FHB resistance.

Approach:
Coordinate the Southern Uniform Scab Nursery. Build on genomic selection activities to increase efficiency of Southern breeding programs. Validate KASP markers associated with resistance in NC13-20076. Conduct a wheat breeding program including use of the double haploid technology. Provide bioinformatics support for genomic selection in the Southern soft wheat region.
