Objective:
Enhance USDA-ARS GBFPD to support the FNS Food Distribution program. This includes transparency and data collection for institutional foods in support of domestic nutrition programs. Implementing new data validations, on-boarding manufacturers who participate in the FNS Food Distribution Program, and collect/submit monthly data reports to the FNS program team as requested.

Approach:
GS1 US will use the barcode standardization method they developed to identifying products and capturing product data has evolved into what is now known as the GS1 System. GS1 will provide for the USDA Global Branded Foods Database information on unique foods and vendors approved to be used in the Children's Nutrition Programs (preschool and daycares) at FNS providing information in a manner which can be easily accessed and used be used by these programs to alert vendors and stakeholders of nutrients composition of such foods GS1 Standards continue to be widely implemented across the food supply chain, as is the GS1 Global Data Synchronization Network™ (GDSN®) which is used to share GS1 standards based product information among trading partners. USDA ARS will provide funding to GS1 US ("cooperator") for services to leverage commercial private sector global standards use in their operations and the industry practice of the GDSN to facilitate the automatic movement of nutritional data from Institutional food manufacturers to the ARS National Nutrient Database.
