Research Project: Development of Gene-Editing Technologies in Poultry and Other Livestock

Location: Plant Genetics Research

Project Number: 5070-31320-001-003-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 20, 2021
End Date: Jul 19, 2024

Objective:
Develop efficient methods for gene modification of poultry.

Approach:
Gene editing in poultry currently exists, but is inefficient and requires research to refine the technology and improve its efficiency. Two strategies will be explored, including modification of stem cells in immature ovaries or testes and introduction of modified cells into developing poultry embryos such that modifications are incorporated into germ cells. It may be necessary to develop pluripotent stem cells. Once reliable techniques are developed, an approach somewhat similar to that described for our swine research program will be pursued in collaboration with poultry researchers at Athens, Georgia and Beltsville, Maryland.
