Research Project: Vaccination Against Salmonella Serotype Reading With a Cross-Protective Salmonella Vaccine

Location: Food Safety and Enteric Pathogens Research

Project Number: 5030-32000-227-022-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2021
End Date: Jul 1, 2023

Objective:
Evaluate the protection provided by a Salmonella vaccine developed by ARS against the recently emerged Salmonella serotype Reading in turkeys.

Approach:
Salmonella is a significant human foodborne pathogen in the United States, and a recently emerging Salmonella serotype in turkeys is The research will evaluate a live, attenuated vaccine developed by ARS. The proposed research will use commercial Hybrid turkey poults to vaccinate within the first week of age and challenge at 4-5 weeks of age with Salmonella Reading outbreak isolates that were isolated by collaborators from turkeys and humans. Using ARS’ established turkey challenge model, we will quantify the colonization capacity of the Reading outbreak isolates in various tissues, evaluate dissemination to systemic organs (such as the liver or spleen), and assess persistence of the outbreak isolates in vaccinated versus non-vaccinated turkeys.
