Create and evaluate an unique set of germplasm by targeted introgression of desirable genes from three tetraploid species including wild and unadapted types using chromosome substitution lines of Gossypium (G.) barbadense, G. tomentosum and G. mustelinum for improved productivity and fiber quality of Upland cotton in diverse environments.
The recurrent parent TM-1 and the selected CS lines of Gossypium (G.) mustelinum (CS-M), G. barbadense (CS-B) and G. tomentosum (CS-T) and the selected CS04 RI lines will be used for field evaluation of agronomic and fiber traits at two locations (USDA/ARS, Mississippi State, USDA/ARS and USDA/ARS, Lubbock, TX in replicated trial plots in summer of 2021. A 25-boll hand-harvested seedcotton sample will be collected from each plot prior to machine picking. These samples will be weighed to determine boll size and ginned on a laboratory 10-saw gin to determine lint percentages and to provide lint samples for fiber analyses. Fiber samples will be sent to Cotton Incorporated for HVI quality determination. Yield will also be determined. Direct comparisons among the lines and TM-1 will be used to detect effects of the substituted chromosomes on important characteristics. We will use an additive-dominance (AD) with G*E interaction genetic model for data analysis to determine the effects of the substituted chromosome or chromosome arms on fiber and agronomic traits following our previous studies. Three quarterly and one annual report will be sent in electronic WORD format to the project manager.
