Research Project: Funding Continuous Dietary Reference Intake Process

Location: Nutrition, Food Safety/Quality

Project Number: 0204-41510-001-038-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Dec 30, 2020
End Date: Dec 29, 2025

Objective:
The Agricultural Research Agency co-chairs the Federal Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) Steering Committee, which is a subcommittee of the Inter-agency Committee on Human Nutrition Research. ARS will use these fund to establish a new agreement with the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine to support activities to re-review existing DRIs.

Approach:
Food and Nutrition Services will transfer funds each year in support of reviews of the DRIs, in large part because the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), led by CNPP, is the foundation for Federal nutrition policy and is dependent on DRI values. While DGA are legislatively mandated to be reviewed every five years, the DRI have no schedule for revision and many have not been re-reviewed in over 20 years.
